The Williamson County Sheriff's Posse - A History
of Service
In July of 1943, during the dark
days of World War II, the Williamson County Sheriff's Posse was chartered at
the direction of Sheriff Bob Davis to assist Deputy Sheriffs and City Marshals
during wartime blackouts and as a quick means to mobilize manpower needed for
emergencies and/or natural disasters.
Since that time the posse has
assisted in suppressing jail breaks, intensive searches for missing persons and
children, fugitive manhunts and aid during natural disasters demonstrating its
unique abilities and readiness, no matter what the need nor whenever it may
arise.
In addition to assisting law
enforcement, the Posse has always aimed to provide a healthy family equestrian
environment and to promote and enjoy the traditional Texas Cowboy values, code
and way of life. The Posse's money-raising activities provide funds for civic
organizations, youth groups and the means to maintain a facility where families
can gather to enjoy participating in horse-related events.
Thanks to former Capt. Steve
Shaefer and the last surviving charter member of the Posse, Y. W. "Fat" Kimbro,
sources of much of this information.
